A defibrillator battery is validated against a standard written in shock cycles rather than office hours. Paper C sets out the IEC 60601-2-4 endurance and accuracy requirements a rechargeable NiMH pack must support, the IEC 62133-1 cell-safety and UN 38.3 transport evidence, and the accelerated aging needed to guarantee performance across a multi-year service life.

The core validation repeats charge-and-discharge-into-50-ohm cycles to beyond the rated endurance (e.g. 2500 cycles), tracking three parameters against cycle count: charge time to target energy, delivered joules against the accuracy window, and battery voltage sag during charging. A well-designed NiMH pack shows gradual, predictable drift; an under-designed pack exhibits a knee where rising internal resistance stretches charge time or prevents reaching 200 J. Testing also covers the declared continuous-operating benchmark (the "200 shocks or 4 hours" class of claim) and charge-hold behaviour (some platforms hold a charged capacitor for 30 seconds).

Crash carts and ambulances are not benign environments: packs are tested across temperature, repeated drop and vibration, and long standby/float. IEC 62133-1 cases (external short at ambient and elevated temperature, overcharge, forced discharge, mechanical abuse, thermal cycling) validate the safety vent and demonstrate that NiMH's failure mode stays controlled — important in a sealed device stored for long periods. UN 38.3 (altitude, thermal, vibration, shock, short, overcharge) clears shipment of replacement packs to hospitals.
Rechargeable packs age through both shock cycling and calendar time. NiMH fade to 80 % over roughly 500–1000 full cycles, accelerated by heat and deep discharge; development combines cycling at the real daily-test pattern with elevated-temperature storage to set a preventive replacement interval. For fleet operators the deliverable is a rule — replace on runtime/charge-time trending or a fixed calendar/service count — that keeps every crash-cart unit inside its charge-time and energy window.
Weijiang Power supplies high-rate NiMH cells and custom defibrillator packs with full evidence: IEC 62133-1 and UN 38.3 reports, resistance-matched welded cells, surge-rated protection and support for IEC 60601-2-4 endurance validation. Send your rated energy, charge-time limit and shock-cycle target and we will engineer a pack that stays inside spec across its declared life.
